Pura Luhur Uluwatu : 80 ft Above The Waves of The Indian Ocean

Bali Personal Drivers - Pura Luhur Uluwatu or Uluwatu Temple of Bali is the most spectacular and one of the oldest temples in Bali which is located high on a cliff about 80 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. Uluwatu lies at the southern tip of Bali in the village of Pecatu, South Kuta district, Badung regency and about 25 Km or the southern city of Denpasar.

History of Pura Luhur Uluwatu

Pura Luhur Uluwatu was originally used as a place of worship a holy priest named Empu Kuturan from the the 11th century, who spread the traditional village with all the rules. This temple is also used to worship the holy priest followed, namely Dang Hyang Nirartha.

Dang Hyang Nirartha came to Bali in late 1550 and end the journey with a so-called Holy Moksah or "Ngeluhur" in this temple. That is the word from which the name of Uluwatu. Hindus in Bali regard this temple is one of the "Pura Sad Kahyangan" as a buffer from 9 of the wind. Position of Uluwatu Temple is face to face with Andakasa Temple, Batur Temple and Besakih Temple. Due it's generally a lot of Hindus strongly believe in Uluwatu that as a medium to implore the gift of life on earth.

As the temple was founded by the conception "Sad Winayaka", Pura Luhur Uluwatu aims to preserve the "Sad Kertih" (Atma Kerti, Segara Kerti, Danu Kerti, Wana Kerti, Jagat Kerti and Jana Kerti). While the temple was founded by "Padma Bhuwana Conception", Pura Luhur Uluwatu established as Lord of the aspects of the southwest. Worship of Lord Shiva Rudra as the God who gives energy to the creation.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a popular place to enjoy the sunset. Famous not only for its unique position, Pura Luhur Uluwatu offers a wonderful viewpoint to see the spectacular sunsets. Warung or small restaurants perched on the cliff offer a comfortable spot to survey the vast Indian Ocean beyond and below the 80-feet-high cliffs with panorama on three sides.

Pleased enjoy the beautiful scenery and sunset, lest you miss the Balinese artists in the Kecak Dance performances were sacred, but also entertaining. This performance was held at Pura Luhur Uluwatu every day, at 18:00 to 19:00 pm. Kecak dance is a dance that tells a fragment of the epic Ramayana, when the goddess Shinta abducted by Rahwana.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is also inhabited by a bunch of monkeys that paced the temple area of interest to visitors and cliff face hoping for a banana or peanuts from the visitors. It is said that these monkeys are believed to guard the temple.

Just below this temple there are Pecatu beach, lots of surfers from around the world come to attempt the waves. Most of the surfers who come to this place is the advanced or expert surfers though - the waves here are pretty big.

Famous not only for its unique position, Pura Luhur Uluwatu offers a wonderful viewpoint to watch the spectacular sunset, but it also offers a beautiful view of the vast Indian Ocean on 80-foot-high cliffs with panorama on three sides.   • If you want to visit this temple, the best time is in the afternoon. In the afternoon you can watch the sunset with a silhouette of Pura Luhur Uluwatu. You will be amazed at the natural landscape exposed in front of your eyes.
    It is absolutely spectacular ...!
  • The monkeys that live in this temple has a habit of taking the luggage travelers such as : cameras, handbags and sunglasses. So take good care of your belongings.
  • To be able to enter Pura Luhur Uluwatu, you have to wear a sarong and sash that can be rented on the ground.
