Bali Personal Drivers - Pendet Dance had been a controversy a few years ago, precisely in the middle of 2009. This happens because of the emergence of one of the dance creations from the island of Bali in a Malaysian tourism advertisement. A commercial television program entitled "Enigmatic Malaysian" which advertises about Malaysia tourism, in its impressions briefly gave rise the Balinese Pendet dancers. The promotion of "Visit Malaysia Year" which presents a glimpse of the graceful swing and the sweet smile from the four of the Balinese Pendet dancers makes Indonesian people uneasy. These tourism advertisements which aggressively deployed internationally by Malaysia, suspected of being a Malaysian effort to claim Pendet dance as its own culture, which is not really a dance that originated from Malaysia but the dance that comes from the island of Bali, Indonesia.
Many argue that Malaysia's claim over Pendet Dance was triggered by pragmatic-economic interests of Malaysia at that time. Malaysia at the time was managing its tourism industry very seriously and promote the nation as "Truly Asia". Pendet Dance as one of Balinese dance which is very familiar to welcome foreign tourists, they borrowed without permission for imaging the aesthetic value of their cultural existence. But because the Pendet Dance as also Reog Ponorogo, Rasa Sayange song and Batik which previously had also claimed to be the Malaysian culture, is the expression of a sub-culture of Indonesia, of course the act and the lunge of Malaysia is unethical, even yelled as the thief. Desire and aggressiveness of capitalism of Malaysian tourism seems to have made this country lost its shame.
The Malaysian act which claims Pendet Dance as the part of their culture, it is very regrettable by I Wayan Rindi family. In his lifetime, I Wayan Rindi never thought to register his invention so as not to be replicated in other countries. Balinese dance was never patented, because it contains the values of the vast spiritual and can not be monopolized as a human creation or a particular nation.
However, the Malaysian government with its arrogant stating that they were not responsible for these ads, they are unreasonable because the ad was made by Discovery Channel Singapore. Discovery Channel Singapore finally sent a letter of apology to the two countries, and stated that their network is solely responsible for the ad. But nevertheless, this incident no doubt triggers anti-Malaysian sentiment in Indonesia.
